Here is my story. I bought my Thompson DVR from Argos in September 2008. The deal was £100 for the unit free Setanta Sports for one year. It also had an "optional" 1 month free Top Up TV offer, with an ongoing contract if selected. There was also a £20 connection fee.
Got home, 1st T/C to Top Up Tv - first thing they did was help me validate the viewing card. I couldn't find the correct number to give them, so ended call to go and find it.
2nd call, 20 minutes later. Spoke with a friendly guy, who helped me register and took my card details to pay the £20 connection fee.
Anyway paid the £20 connection fee, then the nice man said he had sorted Setanta for me and would I like Top Up Tv as well. I specifically stated to him that "I DO NOT WANT TOP UP TV. PLEASE DO NOT GIVE ME TOP UP TV. NO 1 MONTH FREE DEAL, THANKS. He sounded disappointed but that was that. (Or so I thought).
Giving them my debit card details was the worse mistake ever. They took a number of sneaky debit payments out of my account for many months before I realized. It was a nightmare getting them to stop taking the money, lots of phone calls, letters and hassle. My bank told me they were powerless to stop Top Up TV from taking debit payments from my account, even although I had given no permission to Top Up TV to do this. Top Up TV are now refusing to give me a refund, they are actually lying now, making up all sorts of stuff, claiming that I received a welcome letter and a statement of accounts letter, all utter nonsense, I received nothing from them. Except hassle.
Anyway, it's not about the money for me now. How dare Top Up TV have the bare faced cheek and audacity to sneakily steal money from people's bank accounts, people who are completely unaware that they are doing this. I even made the mistake of trying to sort it out with them amicably. I needn't have bothered - they didn't want to know.
Anyway, undeterred, and heightened by reading and speaking with others who are expressing similar bad experiences from Top Up TV, I have started a blog, listing and evidencing every aspect of my awful experience with Top Up TV. It really is quite incredible to read some of the utter gash they come up with to put you off trying to get your money back. And many people are now posting their stories, all expressing the same thing - Top Up TV is Terrible.

I invite you to share my experience of Top Up TV's dreadful customer service at-

Top Up TV are truly terrible, and I hope these posts encourage others to share their experiences. Good luck people X

Where do I start?!

Poor customer service, have so far taken 5 months to issue a very small refund, very poor programme content and a set-top box that has more bugs than 'I'm A Celebrity!'.

Avoid like the plague!

We ordered the new top up tv anytime box in october and was still not guarenteed delivery before xmas. We paid £20 deposit. We cancelled our order on 1st December and was told we would get our deposit back in 14 days. We have phoned 7 times always being told a different story at the last phone call on 17th Jan was told now one has even sorted out our refund so the staff are not trained at all in customer relations. It is bad enough you are on hold for 20mins at a time without staff telling you it has been sorted out and they have actually done nothing for you.

So do not now how much longer we will have to wait for our refund.

One thing is for sure I would not advise anyone I now to use this company.

"Get it for the free month" I thought. "Then cancel." They only appear to have one line for the cancellations and THERE'S NO QUEUE! Just constant retrying. Avoid it. The channels are crap anyway.

The channels and programs available on Top-Up TV are just multi-repeated rubbish.
I tried it, soon realised my mistake and cancelled my subscription. As far as I am concerned £7.99 a month for limited viewing of old pap is just not worth it.
Channels are NOT available all the time. I found that the best programs were transmitted when that channel was not accessable via Top-Up TV.
It's not a rip-off as long as you are happy with cheap chatty no-brainer programs that you have seen many times before.
The Freeview channels are far better.

Excellent value for money....especially if you can't have Sky, cable, or you have kids that you want to entertain. An extra 86 hours a day television for just 26p. UKTV Gold, Turner Classic Movies (TCM), Discovery Channel, Cartoon Network and more, all through your aerial. No need for a dish, or to have your garden dug up for cable. Cheapest Set Top Box is around £45 at the moment....but you can get 3 months viewing, plus the connection fee, and a set top box all for just £59.99 in Comet. Friendly staff on the customer service desk.

Wouldn't recomment this service. They are not long in taking your money, but when it comes to refunds they are not so obliging. I bought a top up tv starter pack, £27.99 from Argos (£20 connection fee and £7.99 voucher for 1st month's viewing. They still wanted a £7.99 payment three days after activation of service. They took this on 3 Jan, then had the cheek to take another payment on 30 Jan. They like to be 2 months in advance I was told when I phoned. I phoned on 4 Feb to complain (another story) and ended up losing the rag and cancelled. The girl told me I was entitled to a £7.99 refund and a cheque would be sent out. I phoned up last week and was told cheque would take up to 21 days to arrive. Phoned this morning to be told I'm not entitled to refund as I had 5 weeks viewing and they do not refund "part" months, only full one's. I am raging - girls on phone are cheeky little bitches as well!! The channels you subscribe to aren't up to much anyway.
