We insured my car for my son to drive the car was covered fully comp. My son had an accident 9 weeks ago and still they haven't paid out we had a courtesy car for just two weeks. Keep calling them and have sent 2 letters but Tesco just keeping making excuses ‘cheque is in the post’ ‘sorry it was our finance department’ usual rubbish!! Meanwhile we are still paying the monthly premiums!! To make matters worse they are trying to tell us the car is only worth £1700! At this rate we will have paid £1700 in premiums before we get our money!! I was led to believe fully comprehensive meant that if the car was a right off your insurance covered you to replace the car NOT SO! We will be lucky to get a Scooter for that!! That's if they ever send the cheque!! Do yourself a favour STEER CLEAR of Tesco car insurance!! I have had to buy a push bike to travel to work and I can’t even take my daughter to school she now has to use public transport to travel the 5 miles to her school and leave home 45 minutes earlier than usual. It’s been a nightmare. I am currently seeking legal advice and talking to the ombudsman.

I insured my car with Tesco Motor Insurance (actually operated by Direct Line). When I moved to Northern Ireland with my job, I phone Tesco to give them a change of address. They told me they don't cover NI, so that was the policy cancelled.

About two months later, they sent a demand for £135 which they say was premium they hadn't collected, plus £75 cancellation charge. I queried it, but the incredibly rude girl at the call centre had would not give me a breakdown of costs. I wrote to them, and after sending three debt collection letters to the wrong address they finally said they'd write with details of what they thought I owed. Part of my job is debt advice, and I noted that the letters broke the OFT guidelines on debt collection because they ask you to ring a premium rate number; they also failed to stop pursuing me after I had disputed the debt.

After a long time I received a response, again sent to the wrong address, apologising for the problems but not actually answering the question. They failed to reply to further letters.

A month later, I get a letter from a debt collection agency, sent to a different wrong address. I am currently having fun with these clowns, who simply don't understand the legislation binding them.

After this I would not go near Tesco again.

I took out car insurance with Tesco in July 2006 before passing my test. My dad phoned them and asked if he could insure the car, which is registered in my name and I be added as a named driver. The operator on the phone said it was fine and that it'd cost me £800 .

I was very happy with this quote, however 6 months later and now having passed my test I phone them to make changes to my insurance, only to find out that I have been driving my car with INVALID insurance! It says clearly on my documents that I am entitled to drive the car, my dad is the main driver and he is not the registered owner of the car, yet the person I have spoken to on the phone has said that it's invalid and was even baffled by what was written on the documents I had.

It worries me. I asked if I was still ok to drive the car and he said "You'd be taking a very high risk". I have been paying for fully comprehensive cover and the guy tells me "If your car had been stolen or damaged then we wouldn't have covered it".

They gave me another quote which exceeded £1000 even after having taken my pass plus!

I am disgusted with Tesco after this and have yet to complain about this outrageous mistake they have made.

I got one thing to say.. Pay your insurance in full if you wanna use tesco!
Dont say you havnt been warned!

So Im driving round, happy as... happy. Then bing-bong. Police. Pulls me over. Checks everything, urm... no insurance..
But its OK cuz I know Ive got insurance right??
Wrong!!
I had a mix up in work and my pay went into the bank a week late, what I didnt realise was that my insurance was due to go out. Didnt realise, didnt think.

Tesco's cancelles - fair enough, but my problem with that is, WHY THE HELL DIDNT THEY TELL ME THEY WERE CANCELLING??
A letter? A phone call? Anything?
So I was driving around with no insurance and I was completely unaware of it. Surely it wouldnt have taken up too much time to let me know??

My advice to everyone is just be careful, I am from now on!

where do I start... (at the beginning I suppose)

around 14 months ago (may 95) I was involved in an accident in my beloved 92 sierra sapphire which hands up was my fault, I lost 2 years NCB (fair enough) and had an excess of £200, so they got the assessor to value my car, he phoned me up offering me a stupid amount which I think was about 140 quid... I told him what I thought of his offer and where he could put it followed by go away and re-assess, he then came back with an offer of £400 and no option to buy it back so I though yeah ok... minus the 200 excess leaves 200 to buy another sierra yeah so they asked do I accept so I said yes (BIG MISTAKE)
so I left it for 1 day and then for the next mornings post for my 200 quid but nothing arrived, so back on the phone to them and they said oh yeah we have been trying to contact you (yeah I'm sure they were) to tell you we don't actually owe you anything because you have to pay off the remainder of the policy because we were paying monthly... I still don't understand to this day how they can legally do that, but by the time I paid that off I ended up owing tesco's £36... so now they are telling me they have scrapped my car and I owe them money (this story goes on so if your bored already go now)... by then I was the maddest I have ever been in my life 500% stressed and pacing the room screaming down the phone at them to either send me 200 pound by the next morning or cancel my claim and I want my car back outside by 9am, they said they can't do either as my car had already been sent off to the scrap yard (by now I had resorted to two of my mums pills to calm me down enough to keep dealing with this) so I found out what scrap yard it was sent to, phoned them and told them not to crush my car as it is coming back to me which will be confirmed by tesco's shortly when I phone them back and get them to confirm this with them, so I did, and they confirmed it was to return and within the hour it was delivered back outside the house and dumped off the back of the truck in the middle of the street, I noticed the next day that there was no alloy plate under the bonnet!!! so a quick phone call to the scrap yard got that sent back to me. just to give you an idea of the damage... drivers side F/bumper, wing, bonnet and bumper needed replacing, so I found another sapphire exactly the same colour (stolen recovery for £50) and got a pattern wing and had it welded on (£40) did all the repairs myself within 1 week of having it back... I double checked with tesco as to whether I was still insured to drive it and they said as long as it passes an mot then yes, so I took it for an mot and it passed with flying colours... all that happened back 14 months ago, since then and because we had been through so much with our sierra I decided to save up treat myself to a full re-spray to get this nearing classic to a top notch mint condition. Despite the fact the re-spray cost £300 and that most people think I'm wasting money on an old car, she is now in 99% mint condition and I will continue to keep her like this for as long as I can as I have no intentions of getting rid of it.

right... I thought all that was over and done with but the other half of this story continued when I went to re-tax her this year, the woman in the post office said... ooh, you have an old log book, we have been instructed to send this off on your behalf for a new one... sign here please sir and here's your tax disc for this year! so fair enough, that was that... until 8 weeks later when I get a letter off the DVLA saying "we can not issue you a log book because according to our records the vehicle has been scrapped as cat.B, enclosed is a form which you must fill in with your chassis/engine numbers etc. if you fail to do so the police will be sent round to examine the vehicle." so I did that and then 2 weeks later I had another letter saying that the vehicle would have to go for an SVA test (which will cost me £150), thinking about it this probable because of that second identical sierra I bought for spare panels/bumpers, they must be assuming I'm driving a cut and shunt or something!!! so I phoned up the DVLA and tried to explain all this which isn't easy in a few sentences on a phone, turns out that tesco's still went ahead and put my car in a Cat.B when they wrote it off as a financial loss and didn't change it to a Cat.C when they gave it back to me (which they were supposed to have). so I phone tesco's and asked they how come they are still taking payments for insuring me on a car they had written off... um, um ,um (by now I'm taking no s**t from these people) they said as they never see the car it is up to me to make sure the car is safe and road legal but if I were to send them a photocopy of an MOT done after the accident they will put my car into a cat.C for me... according to the DVLA if my car is in a cat.B I have to go for an SVA test, if its a cat.C then an SVA test would not be needed though a it would need to go for a VIC test (vehicle identity check) which is £36...................... this is where I am at now, I have yet to send off the MOT copy and I have my VIC1 form ready to send off once cat.B is lifted to C. so providing all goes well (which it should) they will pass me and send me out another log book so I can tax my car next year, if they don't... the day the tax runs out I am going to drive this F****G sierra through the main doors of tesco's headquarters building at top speed... PS, thanks for the address above :)

some facts I missed,
I'm only still with tesco's for now because I can't afford the lump sum required to move to a new insurer.
All this drove me to taking drugs to calm down (already told you that) but I don't even take paracetamol normally, now I feel depressed every time I think about it all, even writing this out to share with you all has got me down, I wasn't going to bother but after seeing their recent advert I felt I just had to write and share just to at least rant and rave to get it out of my system (again).

quoted from recent TV car insurance advert "when it comes to value on 4 wheels, we do have a 'little' experience", well as you can imagine... this really wound me right up.

So if you want cheap car insurance and you want to be treated like something your dog shouldn't have left on the pavement - yeah you go ahead

I was told by Tesco that I would recieve a discount after I had completed the course. My car insurance was going to be £1100 so after hearing I would recieve over £200 for doing it, I decided to pay the £140 for my lessons.

I've since recieved back the letter from Tesco and my return premium is 8%. They don't have any details about pass plus WHATSOEVER on the website so I called to query this and was told that everyone gets 8% back after the pass plus, AND there is a charge to amend the policy!

Although this annoys me to no end, I'm even more annoyed at the fact that Tesco do not give any information on their website and their staff contradict one another.

Overall, the pass plus was a waste of time anyway, I didn't feel it benefited me in any way and would only recommend doing it if you are SURE of the premium you will recieve.

Tesco Motor Insurance.
It may be cheap, but you get what you pay for.
Not so long back I was involved in an accident which was NOT my fault. It was reported to the police (would I bother if it was my fault?) and I have two independent witnesses. The other vehicle drove of and was not identified (I was more worried about my young son in the car to get a number plate).
Since they have no-one else to blame Tesco have informed me that it is a fault claim against me, therefore meaning that I have lost my no-claims and will no doubt have to pay considerably more for my insurance in future.
Secondly the gave a temporary car replacement that I could not fit either my sons car seat, pushchair or indeed my son in.
Thirdly (yes there's more) I have to now return the car as I only get it for two weeks as it was 'my fault' and my car will not be ready for another two weeks because the garage Tesco appointed to fix it seem in no hurry to do so.
Everytime I phone I am kept waiting on hold and each person I speak to says something different.
Yesterday I was entitled to keep the car, today I am not.
I accept that it's all in the smallprint but Tesco have shown absolutely no understanding of what was a very disressing incident. I warn everyone to read the smallprint and not to be fooled by the price. If it seems to good to be true it generally is.

I took out motor insurance for the first time this year after just passing my test. I applyed for Tesco car insurance over the telephone and the advisor who I spoke to told me that if I did my 'pass plus' (an advanced driving course) it would knock 30% off my insurance premium. Fantastic I thought I did the 'pass plus' on the pretence I would be geting at least £300 back from it. The actual pay out I recieved was infact just £50, which wasn't even enough to cover the £120 course cost. When I rang up to query this, I was told quite bluntly there wasn't nothing they could or were prepared to do about it, and started saying how rubbish the girl was at her job who sold the policy to me... (nice I thought complaining about your colleagues like that?) but the problem was that everyone who I spoke to at Tesco all advised me exactly the same thing: pass plus=30% reduction in premium. My advise to new drivers no matter whet the insurance company is to get in writing if this is a set discount or not? I am still absloutley baffled how they have worked out that 30% of £1000 is £50?
