Play.com is a very good online shop. Its true that they don't carry anywhere near as much stock as Amazon.co.uk, but in my personal experience, play.com's service is much better.
For one thing, play.com has zero postage options. All the postage costs are factored into the price. So the price you see is the price you pay, and if you do a quick comparison, you'll see that play.com is MUCH CHEAPER on most new items. ...in the last 2 years, i've ordered many items from play.com, and play.com traders. I've never had a single problem with anything. Items i've ordered include the following... Many dvd's and dvd box sets, posters, t-shirts, shoes, a ps3 console, ds games, and a novelty key-ring. On one occasion, a ds game arrived late, but that was due to postal strikes. .....in short, you can order with confidence at play.com. 99percent of all problems arise from people not reading the small print/product details properly. Play.com is a rising company, amazon has become complacent.
11 days in and I still haven't received my order. 11 days to have something sent from the UK to NL!!! Are they floating it across?? I had a similar problem with my last order which ended up nearly two months late. I said then I wouldn't use them again. Foolishly i thought things may have improved. They haven't. I can get packages from China in a fraction of the time. Awful company. Avoid!
Just like to warn any prospective Play.com customers of the terrible service I have recieved from them. Their console broke two of my sons games at Xmas bought from Amazon. They then suggested I ring Amazon and tell them that the games were faulty and get replacements as they didn't want to replace them. They are now not prepared to replace the faulty console at all and have suggested directing my enquiries to Microsoft. I have never in my life experienced such terrible customer service as I have now recieved. Please save yourself and your childs heartache and steer clear of these cowboys. They're happy to take your money but thats it!!!
Recently Play.com took my money for an item they knew to be out of stock. They were impossible to contact, and when I did speak to their call centre they told me outright lies.
Now here's the interesting thing...I spoke to the Office of Fair Trading and it turns out that Play.com are not subject to any consumer law whatsoever. Jersey is outside the European Union and therefore no consumer laws apply to Play. You don't even have a right to a refund.
My advice is to shop eslewhere, perhaps with copmanies based within the EU...and least you have some legal rights with them. Play.com? Avoid avoid avoid!
I have used Play.com several times over the last 4 years or so and have found them superbly efficient. I ordered dvd box set and received it within 1 week and with free postage. I think they are a great set up. I once had to return an item to them and there was no fuss, I returned it and money was credited back to my account straight away. With such a large company things are bound to go wrong some time but I would recommend them to anyone.
Awful, I called today as I had not received my sons Christmas present ordered on the 30/11/09. It was in stock when I ordered it.
They said it was out of stock and they had sent me an email, which I had not received surprise, surprise (I received 2 previous emails ok).
I expressed my dissapointment at not being told, bad customer service if you ask me, then was told I could reorder it, it was in stock but I would have to pay more for the item. It was with a different seller.
Complaints department not surprisingly were engaged.
Is it me or is this really bad and slightly dodgy practice. It's in stock until we put the price up and then you can't have it for that, pay more and you can.
The companies contract statement seems to give them freedom to exploit this. Where is the customer protection. So much for having all the Xmas presents covered.
What's been happening Play.com have kept saying LITTLE BIG PLANET stuff going to get released went had a look about a month ago things getting delayed a month now there getting delayed again just annoyed because never seen Lbp stuff before and when i do it keeps getting delayed.
i ordered a cinema surround sound system and it is excellent. 2 day delivery and a very reasonable price. a bit dubious about ordering something like this by mail but i have no complaints at all. came complete with all the necessary cables and connections and very clear instructions. fantastic. will shop here again for things other than dvds and cds.
I have used Play for many years and have always had good service. Delivery is usually around 3-4 days and pre-order items usually arrive on the day of release. I would highly recommend.
In late November 08 I placed a big order for Christmas consisting mostly of DVDs and computer accessories. My order went through on the website. Then 24 hours later I get an email saying the order is confirmed "awaiting payment confirmation". Three days later I get an email saying my payment was declined. I contacted my bank, who said the payment was fine and that they were waiting for Play.com to take the money!! I emailed play.com... No reply... I phoned play.com... I waited 38 minutes to get through (£3.80 in call charges) just to get through. They told me there was something amiss with my address... I checked what I had typed (I had a print out)... everything was perfect! They said that there was still a problem with the address. The address matched exactly that of the card, even the bank agreed!! What is their problem?!?!? I asked them to take the money again... They said we can't, you have to re-order! I did... Same thing happened, except this time I was on the ball and called them the next day. And guess what another problem with the address / card address... They asked for another card. I gave them one... They said it will take 45 minutes to process (funny how it's quicker than what it was before!!) they also told me I would get a confirmation email in 45 minutes..... I waited and waited and waited.... No email... I waited three hours... I phoned them again, 32 minute wait this time (another £3.20 of my hard earned money!!!!).... I cancelled the order and told them they weren't worth the script on a monitor... I re-ordered with Amazon.co.uk and saved £3 (although 1 item I had to buy at Waterstones... See my Amazon.co.uk Blagg (positive for Amazon
Seems I am going to repeat what a lot of people have already said. I've ordered shedloads of DVDs and CDs through Play.com and although they have a slightly longer lead time for delivery than other online retailers I have always had the goods inside a week. Two weeks ago, however, I ordered a mobile phone and although the money was duly taken from my account and I received an email confirming the order and a second email advising dispatch had taken place, I am still without said mobile phone. I am frustrated that Play.com insist one waits an almost unheard of three weeks before reporting the item missing so I have sent emails to about three Play.com emails addresses I was able to garner from online forms but all have gone entirely unanswered. As a consumer I am going to vote with my feet and simply not do business with Play.com again. A mistake is fine, and I don't expect them to offer a perfect service, but when you take £90 from someone's bank account the least you can do is reply to any one of their five emails when they advise you that their item has not arrived. The disdain with which Play.com is treating me has left a very foul taste in my mouth and I just won't use them any more. As to how I go about getting my money back, I suppose I will have to wait another week and then report it missing, and see if finally Play.com will take action.
I have bought things from Play.com in the past with no problems, but they have always been cheaper things like games and cd's etc. This time I ordered an Ipod costing £179. I waited about 2 weeks and it never arrived. There is no email address on their site to contact them, which is really frustating and you can't fill out the online form to say you haven't received it until 21 days. Now after 24 days I have discovered that even if you do fill out the online form, they still have to send you a missing items form which you have to fill out sign and send back via the post. They had already sent me a missing item form which after 13 days they claim still not to have received. What is really interesting, is that my daughter has just told me that she also ordered an ipod nano over 2 weeks ago and has still not received hers.
I filled out the online missing items form and asked if they had an email address as I would prefer to use this method of contact than telephone and they ignored my question, just replied and said we haven't received your missing item claims form.
From reading other peoples comments, it appears that they are o.k. sending small items, but if you order anything electrical, their service is really poor.
Now I am at a loss to know what to do, as they wont replace the item until they receive my missing items claim form, I have now sent 2 back to them and they claim not to have received them. The worst part is calling customer service, as their accents are really strong and I can't understand a word they say. I will never order another item from Play.com, this service is terrible.
Incidentally, normally when you order an item from them they send you one email to say they have received your order and another to say they have despatched it. I never received the email to say they had despatched it, yet online it says it has been posted and they have taken my money. When I call they wont listen to this, they just keep accusing the postmen of stealing it.
Like others, I was happy with this company until now, having previously bought dvds, games etc. This was my first attempt to buy a large item from them (a stereo amplifier), and it didn't go well. Initially, things looked ok, and my delivery turned up in timely fashion. But on opening it, turned out they sent me a CD player instead. So phoned them up, arranged pickup of the CD player, and shipment of the amplifier. (Simple mistake I thought, since the CD Player had a similar code to the amp - bit careless though).
The following week a package arrived from Play - not good - this time they had sent me a satellite navigation system. Another phone call to Play, and the guy promised to sort it all out - some excuse about items being on the wrong shelves, but what sort of monkeys do they employ in the warehouse? Anyway, third time lucky I thought.
But a week later, I got an email saying that my money had been refunded. Phoned again, to be told they had accidentally refunded, but couldn't do anything about it now. I'd have to place the order again. They must be joking - I'm not having any more to do with them.
Until now they've been fine. BUT, we and some friends both ordered a toy,(Hogwarts Hall) within a couple of days of each other. Both were told nearly three weeks ago that it had been dispatched. And neither have arrived. And you can't contact play.com.
They don't accept online contact for 21 days. There's no direct e-mail. The fax number I managed to find doesn't connect. A whois search just leads to a web hosting/design company.
Play.com don't want to be accountable.
I ordered a game from Play.com on 14th December and received it on 3rd March!!!!
This was after phoning Play.com 3 times to cancel the order!!!
Avoid this bunch of Morons!!!
I have always had an excellent experience using this company. They even allowed me to return goods that I had for over 3 months. I had been building up some DVD's for my son's birthday over a period of Month's. We only realised on his birthday that the case inside was damaged. Even after having the DVD for at least 3 months Play were more than happy to exchange it for another one.
Ordered a game on their website 'guaranteed delivery for christmas' ha ha ha.
That was on 14th December its now 23rd and the game still hasn't been dispatched!
They have had the cheek to take the money from my account but not send the game, apparently it is still processing (it has been for 4 days).
They now say (obviously) it won't be Christmas delivery and they won't give me my money back so i can buy the game elsewhere!
Have purchased from them before but DEFINITELY won't be purchasing from them again!!!!!
I've never before had a problem ordering goods through the Internet from either Play.com or any other online retailer but recently when I ordered an LCD TV monitor for £220 they emailed me to ask me to ring them to do an additional security check. After I had done so they said my order would be processed shortly but two weeks later as nothing had happened I rang them again only to be told that I had failed their security check and they couldn't tell me why. Terrible communication and terrible systems in place for security checking has resulted in me losing confidence in this company's ability to deliver a good service and I will never use them again or recommend them.
I sent back a duplicate game that I received in error in July and I didn't receive payment for the postage. It cost me €7.50 and I'm annoyed that I have had to pay for Play.com mistakes.
I was very happy with Play after a couple of years ordering CDs and DVDs. However, after buying a Samsung SH-S182 DVD writer for my PC, it was delivered with no box, just placed in a plastic bag. No protection.
The software was missing so I had to phone and arrange to send it back. Play said they would refund my postage charges, but I only got £1.50 of the £4.00 it cost.
I also asked for the replacement to be properly packed, but this request was ignored and the DVD arrived as before, with a small dent.Other buyers have also had damaged DVD writers because of this poor packing (check the Play.com feedback for this item).
I left feedback with these points but Play never posted it. I wonder why...
Exactly the same problem as another comment. Ordered a LCD tv on a sale, order went through ok. I received an email from them next day to telephone them for an extra security check, which I did. I was told everything was ok and should receive tv in the next day or two.
Nothing came so I phoned them and told they were now out of stock and not getting any more stock and to cancel the order.
They should have reserved the tv if they wanted an extra security check. So be warned if you get an extra security check you probably will have the same problem!
Another complaint with play.co is that they have no email or message system so it's impossible to communicate other than the phone!
I have used play.com for a good while and the service has been faultless. Fo the last 8 years or so I have shopped online I have never had issues using online merchants and play.com are the best by a country mile. I design shopping cart sites for a living and 8 out of 10 'problems' are created by customers incorrect details or actions as can usually be seen by the shopping carts admin and databse system.

After I'd reported the 2 items missing they sent me a missing item form to fill in, which I did, but then never heard anything more.
Their online "help" is laughable, no email contact details at all, only a "help"line number which never gets answered.
And of course there's nowhere on their site to leave feedback, because if there was no one would ever buy anything from them.
Absolute worst online shopping experience ever.
I filled out the online missing items form and asked if they had an email address as I would prefer to use this method of contact than telephone and they ignored my question, just replied and said we haven't received your missing item claims form.
